How to Identify Lake Gaston Termites

Termites are active year round, but Spring is usually when homeowners will notice signs that termites may be active in or around their home.

Don't let termites intrude on your spring fever – watch out for these symptoms:

  • Termite Swarmers outside or inside your home
  • Stuck windows or doors
  • Damage or pinholes under paint or wallpaper
  • Mud tubes on the side of your home
  • Termite droppings
  • Discarded wings

signs of termites near lake gaston:

Early signs of destruction to your home include stuck windows or doors. Wood in these areas is easy to get to, and the frames can begin to warp as termites eat through the wood. This damage can look like tunnels or tiny pinholes underneath the paint, wallpaper, or wood paneling on your walls. Bubbling paint, discolored wallpaper, and buckling wood are also possible symptoms of termite tunnels.

Termites create mud tubes outside your home to help them safely travel between their colony and food. These look like narrow veins along the sides of your home and often run from the ground to an area of exposed wood. If you find a tube, break off a piece to check for live termites. You may not see any at first, but you should come back to see if the tube has been repaired.

Frass or termite droppings are pellet-shaped and appear like wood shavings. Eastern Subterranean termites are very common found in Virginia & Northern North Carolina, and cause significant damage in a short period of time.. Termite swarmers are responsible for reproduction and have two pairs of large wings. When they find a mate, it sheds its wings. These pests are attracted to light so that you may discover discarded wings near windowsills or doors. Trust Commonwealth Exterminators for expert termite control in Southside Virginia and Lake Gaston if you notice these common signs.

How Can I Prevent Termites?

Termites are attracted to wood; if you’re still building your home, a concrete foundation, proper ventilation, and wood sealants can make your structure less attractive to these pests. After construction, you can prevent termites by keeping the soil and foundation dry by fixing leaks immediately. Reduce openings in your building by filling cracks quickly with cement or grout. Ensure proper ventilation by maintaining vents free from blockages and keep plants from growing against exposed wood surfaces.

Protecting your building is critical when termites build new colonies and begin to mate during the spring months. We offer pest control plans that help our team treat your home all year to prevent pest infestations. Our plans are customized to your home and local weather, so our visits are uniquely timed for your property’s specific needs. Termites vs. Ants

While termites and ants are both common household pests, treating an infestation requires a different approach. This is why it’s important for our team to identify what kind of pest you have before we get to work.

First, we’ll take a look at the insect itself. Termites have straight antennae and wide bodies, while ants’ antennae are bent and they have narrower, pinched bodies. Winged termites also have wings that are equal in length, where a flying ant’s wings will be uneven. Ants also tend to be darker in color, from dark red to black, while termites are translucent light brown, yellow-ish, or even white.

We’ll then look at any structural damage these pests have caused. Termites eat wood, where ants do not. While the carpenter ant will burrow through wood to make its nest, they do not actually eat through it. Thus, leftover sawdust, wood pellets, and pulpy residue are most likely signs of a termite infestation. Ants, on the other hand, are scavengers, attracted to leftover food particles, especially around trash cans or improperly stored pet food. You will often see lines of ants gathered in these places where termites prefer being secluded in your walls, trees, wood piles, or other wooden structures.
